The God who is Never Distant

“God is our Refuge and Strength; a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

“For what great Nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?” Deut 4:7

Is there anyone outside the people of God who has Him so near as we do? What Godless, Christless person has God so near as the child of God? This is what makes followers of Christ stand out from the rest of the world –God is available to us for the most minute of need. God is as near to us as each breath of air we breathe.

"Why," You ask? Have you never thought of the fact that a true, loving earthly father cannot forsake his children? How much more then can a heavenly, perfect Father who is better than the best father we can imagine or know on this earth be unshakably faithful to those He has bought and adopted as His own?

He bought us with a high price, and He did not buy us in order to throw us away or forsake us.

Oh soul, He is always closer than you dream Him to be. Awaken your faith and peer through her eyes at the God who is never beyond your reach. As you look, you will find Him present, very present, in your need.

Maybe you imagine Him standing aloof and distant from your mess, but should you look from that vantage point of faith, you will see Him in your mess, surrounded by it, poised to touch it as soon as you ask Him to, believing He is truly all you need.

Oh soul, what mess are we referring to but the tangled cobweb of thoughts and feelings that keep you from soaring in each trouble? Have you been trying to untangle yourself from them in order to see God? You will never see God that way!

You must make the choice the psalmist made and say with him, “My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for HE shall pluck my feet out of the net.” (Psalm 25)

Again I say, look at Him through faith’s eyes, and you will see Him, abundantly available, extremely present to help you in your need. Look at Him in defiance against your own thoughts and feelings that contradict Him. Believe Him when He says He’s present. It’s never a question of if He is or not, for His promises are true- He never forsakes His own.
